STORY OF WORK :
The project title is the symbol "O" - pronounced as "circle" - representing a line making as a boundary for an enclosed space that is separated from its surroundings. The seats serve as a transition for the participants to synchronise with the work and environment by tightly wrapping design. Cocoon is an interesting inspiration for me to create seatings with mesh fabric material. The hanging design provides a swinging movement to release the pressure of audience who may enjoy any boundless imagination. The individual seats are inter-connected and with covers. Therefor, the audience should be able to experience a private space.
The experience of the work is intentionally kept ambiguous: The constructive framework of the work visually and in terms of materials etc. refers to the sports ground’s fence, giving the sense of strong protection, safety, maybe even imprisonment. To soften this impression organic wooden beams – and also the soft textile cocoons – are integrated with the metal frame to balance the potentially too rigid appearance. Similarly the inner circle of the installation is laid out with sand, contrasting the harder texture of the concrete finish of the “outside” floor. The tightly wrapped cocoon seats again are slightly uncomfortable to re-synchronise the audience’s mindset to continue relaxing but keep thinking also.
The work does not limit the audience to any particular experience. It is to arouse their interest. "O" is not to provide any solutions for the audience; it's a space for the audience to get answer by themselves.
